Gnosticism and Mormonism

Gnosticism and Mormonism

The LDS church has made the claim that the Christian church fell into complete apostasy after the death of the apostles. In connection with this claim, many LDS apologists have made the assertion that it was the influence of Greek thought creeping into the church that had an impact on this apostasy, leading to the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds.

While I will readily admit that there were church fathers that tried to marry Greek philosophy and Christian doctrine, I don’t believe that it was prevalent to the extent that the councils ignored the biblical text to “create” a Greek sounding God.

It is interesting to note the influence of Greek thought in the LDS church. This is a paper I wrote years ago comparing aspects of an ancient heresy called Gnosticism with aspects of the LDS church. I want to be clear that I don’t believe that the LDS church is completely Gnostic. In fact there are aspects of Mormonism that no true Gnostic would adhere to. But I throw this out there for your consideration.
