Understanding the Cults – Session Four

Bethel

Welcome class!

Here’s your course material for session #4

  1. Today we’re going to continue tactic #1 and working our way through the gospels and how the life, ministry and teachings of Jesus relate to the groups we are discussing.

You can either continue on the listen/watch route or the read route for this section as they are arranged differently.

To read this section, go to pages 120-132 in the book.

2.  I’m also going to introduce you to tactic #2 today. This is based off of the fact that most of these groups have their own sacred writings, a prophet or leader that is receiving modern day revelation, or their own translation of the Bible. Many of these groups will encourage you to read and/or pray about these Scriptures in order to determine whether their group is true.

Again, this can be a very awkward discussion. Again, we are going to turn this situation around and use it as an opportunity to discuss those Scriptures. Specifically, we’re going to use their Scriptures to help teach them true Christian doctrine.

You can either listen, watch or read this section.

For this section, we will take a look at: a) “Have You Prayed about the Book of Mormon?” podcast link (p. 162-174) b) Using the New World Translation to Teach Christian Doctrine podcast link (p. 175-180). The principle remains the same for the other groups we are discussing.

To view these via Youtube, click on the media window below and watch videos #18-22 corresponding to the above:

3. We’re also going to start on tactic #3 today. Probably the largest division between the cults and Biblical Christianity is the contrast between salvation by grace alone through faith alone and salvation by works. How do we communicate the concept of grace to an individual coming from a religious mindset?

You can listen, watch or read this section. However, I do recommend listening or watching this section as there are some visuals that might be helpful that don’t come across as well in the book.
