Welcome to the Understanding the Cults class for Bethel Seminary San Diego’s J-term, In-Ministry program 2016.

I’m your professor, Jason Oakes. Please follow the list of instructions below to view/listen to this week’s class session. Remember to journal as you do so. Make note of any new information, questions or thoughts that come to your mind as you’re processing the material. This journal will be turned in for assignment 3.

Once you’ve completed viewing all of the course material for this session, please take careful note of the assignments. All assignments will be explained in both the written syllabus as well as the overview of the syllabus video.

Feel free to contact me anytime. My email is joakes30@yahoo.com. Please include the course title in the subject line of the email.

  1. I’d like to introduce myself to you through this video I put together. Simply click on the media window below. You can also read this material in p. 2-6 in the book.

2. We’re going to begin by doing an overview of all of the major American groups that would be considered either a cult or simply false doctrine. One of the things that I want you to address in assignments 1 & 2 is whether you would consider each of the groups that we cover in these videos a cult or simply Christian groups teaching false doctrine and why.

You have an option of listening, watching or reading these sections.

The groups that we’re going to cover in this session are: a) Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) podcast link (p. 8-17 in the book) b) Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW)  podcast link (p. 18-25 in the book) c) Scientology podcast link (p. 26-35 in the book) d) Christian Science podcast link (p. 36-43 in the book) e) International Church of Christ (ICC) podcast link. (p. 44-47 in the book)

To view these session via Youtube, please click on the media window below and watch videos 2 – 6 in the playlist corresponding with the above groups mentioned. Remember to journal as you do for assignment #3.
