What do you say when your LDS friend asks, “Have you prayed about the Book of Mormon?”

*          What Do You Say?

*            … when your LDS friend says, “Have you prayed about the Book of Mormon?”

*         What we will not discuss today:

*            The complete lack of archaeological support for the Book of Mormon

*            The historical anachronisms in the Book of Mormon

*            Racism in the Book of Mormon

*            The translation process of the Book of Mormon

*            Stolen passages from the King James Version

*            What the Bible teaches about trusting in the heart

*         When you are asked:

*             Ask them to share their testimony of the Book of Mormon

*             Ask them to share the story of how they gained a testimony

*             Ask them if they believe that everything in the Book of Mormon is the word of God

*             Ask them if there is anything in the Book of Mormon that they don’t believe

*             Tell them that you are confused about some passages in the Book of Mormon and ask if you can discuss your questions with them

*           The Nature of God

*          God has always been God

*                            For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity. (Moroni 8:18)

*          One God, Three Persons

*                      And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of theFather, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen. (2 Nephi 31:21)

*           God had to take on the image of man

*                      And because he said unto them that Christ was the God, the Father of all things, and said that he should take upon him theimage of man, and it should be the image after which man was created in the beginning; or in other words, he said that man was created after the image of God, and that God should come down among the children of men, and take upon him flesh and blood, and go forth upon the face of the earth— (Mosiah 7:27)

*           Did the church need to be restored?

*          God’s word cannot pass away

*                      And assuredly, as the Lord liveth, for the Lord God hath spoken it, and it is his eternal word, which cannot pass away, that they who are righteous shall be righteous still, and they who are filthy shall be filthy still; wherefore, they who are filthy are the devil and his angels; and they shall go away into everlasting fire, prepared for them; and their torment is as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever and has no end. (2 Nephi 9:16)

*           What Must I do to be saved?

*          Option A: Repent & forsake all your sins

*                      Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God. (Moroni 10:32)

*          Option B: Trust completely in Christ

*                      And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.(Moroni 6:4)

*          No repentance after death

*               And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so manywitnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do notprocrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh thenight of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked. (Alma 34:33-35)

*           Where did the book of mormon come from?

*          What you need to know about this verse:

*            This is a direct quote from Isaiah 29:4

*            It is explained in the Book of Mormon as a fulfilled prophecy about the Book of Mormon

*          Read them this verse:

*                      For those who shall be destroyed shall speak unto them out of the ground, and their speech shall be low out of the dust, and their voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit; for the Lord God will give unto him power, that he may whisper concerning them, even as it were out of the ground; and their speech shall whisper out of the dust. (2 Nephi 26:16)

*         Ask them:

*            Do you believe this is talking about the Book of Mormon?

*            Do you believe this is a fulfilled prophecy?

*            What significance does this verse have for you?

*            Does this verse say that the Book of Mormon has a familiar spirit?

*            What do you think that means?

*          Then show them:

*                      And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that havefamiliar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter—should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead? To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. (2 Nephi 18:19-20)

*          You might also want to show them:

*              Familiar Spirit: a supernatural spirit or demon supposed to attend on or serve a person.  – Dictionary.com

*               The word familiar is from the Latin familiaris, meaning a “household servant,” and is intended to express the idea that sorcerers had spirits as their servants ready to obey their commands. Those attempting to contact the dead, even to this day, usually have some sort of spirit guide who communicates with them. These are familiar spirits. – Gotquestions.com

*         Ask them:

*            Do familiar spirits sound like a good thing?

*            Do you still think the Book of Mormon has a familiar spirit?

*            What does the Book of Mormon say about somebody who consults familiar spirits?

*            If the Book of Mormon does have a familiar spirit, what should you do?
